Jen Hill

Jen Hill’s Foxy Brown-inspired painting is continues the artist’s Pop dominance on walls around Charlotte, both inhabiting the interiors of local businesses and facing the public. Hill moves between realistic portraiture, pulp recreations, and lively signage, yet all of her work is packed with bursts of color. Contained within the hair of Hill’s version of Pam Grier is a contained chaos, splatters of vibrant hues serving as an initial layer to the work. She uses muted tones for the rest of the image, striking a balance that feels at once inspired by the figurative work of Warhol and the tone of the inspiration’s own films. The Kernersville native and East Carolina University grad has been making work in Charlotte since 2011. She’s known for both her paintings and her chalk designs, used for menus in restaurants throughout the region. Each side of her practice grabs the viewers’ attention and invites them to stay a while.
