Brittani George, who works under the name “Georgie Nakima,” took an atypical path to a career in art. The Winston-Salem State University graduate spent her academic life in the sciences, with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Her career has been spent in both research in those areas and in parallel, as an artist, bringing the lessons and influence of the natural world into her self-taught creative practice. You’d be hard-pressed to find any other artist in the city with resume lines for both the N.C. State University Plants for Human Health Institute and Charlotte’s Arts & Science Council. “My insight in life sciences gave me the opportunity to explore layers of energy on a micro and macro level,” she says. “Being exposed to the rhythms of nature really encouraged me to practice visually mapping science as art. I had a strong source to feed a constant curiosity that led me to a higher awareness to the laws of nature, biodiversity, wildlife, botany, and even the human footprint. Subconsciously, I’ve used this to connect my viewer’s gaze with concepts of interconnectivity and oneness that prelude to the vitality of life and soul.” Her mural represents the divine feminine in all of its strength and grace. Two of the figure’s arms are in prayer, one gestures the “Live Long and Prosper” adage, and the last holds an AK-47. “It’s symbolic to my demeanor, and many others who choose peace,” she says. “Who live in gratitude. Who do no harm, but take no shit.”
